About Lu's Labs:
Lu's Labs is an all volunteer, 501(c)3 approved foster-based rescue based in Alexandria, Virginia. We rescue labrador retriever and labrador mixes from high-kill shelters throughout the Southeastern US and rehome them in a five-hour radius of the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Lu's Labs was established in 2015 with the sole mission of saving the lives of as many labs as possible.
A large number of the dogs that we rescue come from dire situations - high-kill shelters, abandonment or emergencies. Most of our rescues need medical attention for things as minor as updating shots to serious medical conditions that cost thousands of dollars. Additionally, approximately one-third of the dogs are heartworm positive. We provide all their medical care, including heartworm treatment, and have never turned a dog away, despite any medical care they might need.
In just three years, over 800 dogs have been saved and placed into their forever homes by Lu's Labs. And, this year, we are working to meet a goal of saving 500 dogs! In three years, we have grown from only a handful of volunteers to a network of over 100 volunteers (Southern and Northern foster families, adoption coordinators, transport volunteers, and board members).
We have over 12,000 Facebook followers, and a robust email marketing list. Our website traffic is over 7,000 visits per month.
About the event:
Labapalooza is our annual fundraiser, which includes a walk-a-thon and is our best attended event of the year. We hold the event at Camp Letts in Edgewater, MD, because there is plenty of room for folks to allow their kids and dogs to run and play, and provides the opportunity for dog swimming. Additionally, there is a large amount of space for vendors and food trucks. Even though Labapalooza is held in Edgewater, a large number of the attendees come from the Northern Virginia area.
