About the event
Introduction
Barnsley Road Club are one of the UKs oldest cycling clubs est 1924, comprising of 150 members. We run numerous events within our calendar year including top level road racing, time trialling and charitable sportive cycing events.
Cycling has seen a massive explosion in the UK; and in Yorkshire we are reaping the success of the 2012 London Olympics, the Tour de France victories of Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, and the delivery of the 2014 Tour De France Grand Depart and 2015 Tour De Yorkshire.
Our Events
On 22nd May 2016, Barnsley Road Club are promoting our annual British Cycling road race day, comprising of 2 races - the first an introductory level race (Category 3&4), the second an Elite UK cycle race. We are blessed to be in part of the world to offer an immensely tough circuit, particularly the elite race, with 90 miles and 2500 metres of climbing.
These are raced on two of the hardest circuits in the UK, and one of the best organised events on the Yorkshire calendar.
We are currently reaching out to the UK top professional cycling teams, and inviting them to our event, which is uniquely situated between major UK events, including the Lincoln Grand Prix, an annual international level race, the UK regional championships, and a good number of weeks prior to the UK national championships. We see this race as a probable battle ground for pro riders to test their form in time for the national championships.
We are also in discussions with the UK top photographers who share imagery between many major uk cycling publications and online websites.
The other events we are running in 2016 are a Time Trial which commonly attracts the best riders in the country; and our charity sportive ridden in the memory of our member Michael Thornton's son Matthew, who lost his life in combat in Afghanistan. All fundraising will be in aid of Help for Heroes, and we have promised any proceeds from our 2016 race calendar will be offered to that outstanding cause as well.
Our Audience
We are so proud that we have 150 members within our club, and as a result of the UK cycling boom, our growth has been between 30-50% year on year for the last 5 years.
We have seen a 40% increase in use of our club website, taking us from 10,000 hits in 2014, to c15,000 hits in 2015. 39% of these hits were from brand new unique users.
We are regular promoters inside social media forums and reach out to an estimated 26,000 forum members each year on multiple occasions.
Our club races are limited to c120 racers on the day, but are unlimited to riders entering the races (we have to select the field) - in 2015 we had over 350 people entering our events.
In 2016 Barnsley Road Club will have a 3 page feature in Cycling Weekly which is read by 25,000 readers each week.
