For Our Third Year Running...WIRE's Great Debate!
The purpose of this event is to create an engaging and fun environment to talk about some of the hardest topics around gender equity. WIRE’s aim is to invite people to think about how gender equity impacts our everyday lives, and how all of us can play a role in creating positive change.
WIRE has been addressing gender inequity for over 40 years. We have worked with thousands of people over the years in community, government, and private sector. We know that when it comes to gender equity, sometimes conversations get too complicated and too scary to continue.
While International Women’s Day is a good time to talk about women and gender-diverse people and the issues they face, we often end up frustrated, moving from one event to another, discussing what’s not working. We are seeing young people disappointed and losing hope, feeling that nothing is changing or, even worse, that we are going backwards.
At WIRE, we want to use the momentum that is usually built around IWD to get people involved in inspiring and positive conversations around some difficult topics related to gender equity. We also know from years of delivering training and learning sessions that we learn best when we are laughing together. The experience of laughter helps us to be more open to learning new topics and even considering opposing views. This is why we are holding a debate.
Last year our debate featured Ro Allen, Kirsty Webeck, Beverly Wang, Janty Blair, Darcy Vescio and was hosted by comedian Nelly Thomas. We had hundreds participate in a panel discussion. Next year we want to be bigger and better by offering a live auction, prizes, canapes and more!
In 1983, a group of remarkable women were united by a shared vision: give women a sense of self-agency by providing them free information and referral services and empower them to make choices over their own lives.
These women became the founders of WIRE. Underpinned by a feminist philosophy, WIRE was formed through the combined efforts of individual women and organisations in response to the many questions women had, concerning major life choices and their basic human rights.
This charity has been active for over 40 years supporting the comunity.
