The Sickle Cell Benefit Gala,

Holiday Inn St. Louis - Downtown Conv Ctr, St. Louis, Missouri, United States Holiday Inn St. Louis - Downtown Conv Ctr, St. Louis, Missouri, United States

  • About the event

My name is Tiesha Gaten. My mother, Patrece Covington, was born with Sickle Cell Anemia. Sickle Cell is a blood disease that is inherited from one or both parents. This blood disease typically causes their carrier to endure a painful crisis that attacks the entire body, which can leave a person  in a state of helplessness, requiring an emergency room visit and/or hospitalization.
The average life span of a person living with Sickle Cell is between 42-47 years old. My mother was 45 when she passed away from multiple organ failure due to the disease. Other characteristics of Sickle Cell Diaease includes vision lost, fatigue, swelling of the hands and/or feet, and frequent infections.
ProgressFWD purpose for hosting The Sickle Cell Benefit Gala is to inform and educate the public about Sickle Cell Anemia, a disease that greatly affects minority communities. We will bring awareness to Sickle Cell Anemia by presenting speakers that are currently in the fight for a cure, and people with the disease that are currently fighting for their lives.
Our mission is to educate the world and provide financial and academic assistance to families directly impacted by the disease.

    Why should you sponsor?

You should sponsor this event because lives are dependent on it. There are hundreds of thousands  of people suffering with Sickle Cell Disease in the United States, millions world wide. Millions in the US are carrying the Sickle Cell trait, including me.
Most people don't know this disease exist because it disproportionately effects the black and brown community.

Sicke Cell Disease occurs in about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births.

    1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.

And about 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with the sickle cell trait (SCT).

This disease also has the ability to destroy a family. From the moment I was born I became a caregiver. From a young age I had to watch my mother fight. Everyday she gave it her all to stay alive, to raise and nurture me. She was my purpose and unfortunately she died from complication with the disease a month before my 20th birthday.

My goal with this event is to not only spread awareness and educate the people. My goal is to also give back to a student that's been directly impacted by this disease. Give them the support that so many people gave me.

    Tiesha Gaten

My name is Tiesha Gaten. I am the daughter of a woman who lost her battle to Sickle Cell. My aspirations in life are to make this world a little better than what I found it.
I've seen and experienced things no child should endure, but it's apart of my story; It's my legacy. And if I can do anything to help a student that's enduring this, whether they have the disease or someone directly related to them has it, life a little easier then all the pain I've experienced would be worth it.
