Teetotal Initiative’s mission is to help individuals sustain sobriety by providing a welcoming, supportive environment that fosters connection, joy, and purposeful living. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and facilitating sober-focused programming that directly addresses some of the most common causes of relapse—namely, isolation, boredom, and loneliness. These factors often pose significant challenges for individuals maintaining long-term recovery, and our organization was founded to specifically combat these barriers by offering engaging alternatives that enrich the sober lifestyle.

Established in 2023, Teetotal Initiative was created to fill a vital gap in the recovery community by offering free events, activities, and high-quality programming designed to enhance quality of life and support relapse prevention efforts. Since our inception, we have proudly hosted over 60 free events that bring people together in meaningful and fun ways. These have included a diverse range of activities such as cooking classes that teach healthy and creative recipes, stand-up comedy shows that inspire laughter and joy, kayaking excursions that connect participants with nature, holistic wellness classes that support mind-body health, mini golf outings, tours of local museums, an ongoing book club, and food and history tours exploring Pittsburgh’s vibrant neighborhoods. Each event is designed to create an inclusive atmosphere where individuals in recovery can build social connections, discover new interests, and find renewed purpose.

A core reason we keep our events free is rooted in understanding the challenges many face early in recovery. Individuals are often encouraged to change “people, places, and things,” which can include their jobs or housing situations—major life shifts that can come with financial instability. We never want anyone to be excluded from our community due to monetary concerns. In fact, many of the individuals who might feel they can’t afford to attend events are often those who need the connection and support the most. To uphold this inclusivity, all of our programming remains free of charge. While we do offer an optional donation program to allow those who are able to give back and support Teetotal Initiative’s growth, we prioritize accessibility and welcome everyone, including those who are financially starting over.

While our primary focus remains in Allegheny County, we are actively expanding our reach to neighboring counties including Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette, Beaver, and Butler. This regional growth reflects the increasing demand for sober community programming and our commitment to making these vital resources accessible to more individuals throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Alongside our in-person activities, we have also launched virtual programming to reach individuals regardless of location or circumstances. Our online offerings include a virtual book club and virtual cooking classes, which allow participants to connect safely from their own homes while continuing to build community and enhance their recovery journey.

As the first-of-its-kind recreational sober community in the Pittsburgh region, Teetotal Initiative champions a stigma-free, inclusive, and celebratory atmosphere where individuals can connect authentically without judgment. We promote a culture of meaningful sobriety by offering a wide variety of community opportunities tailored to diverse interests and needs. Our doors are open to all individuals committed to a sober lifestyle, regardless of how they arrived at recovery or their chosen pathway. We proudly welcome people from all backgrounds and are not affiliated with any particular recovery program, philosophy, or faith tradition. This non-denominational approach allows us to serve as a complement to anyone’s existing recovery toolbox—whether that includes 12-step groups, outpatient therapy, medication-assisted treatment, or other methods.

It’s important to note that while Teetotal Initiative provides vital social and recreational support, we do not offer formal support groups or professional medical or therapeutic services. Instead, our focus is on the “rest of life” that happens outside of clinical treatment and group meetings—those everyday moments and social connections that contribute significantly to sustained sobriety. By cultivating a vibrant sober community where individuals can feel seen, valued, and engaged, we aim to reduce the risk factors for relapse and foster long-term wellness.

Our ongoing commitment is to expand the reach and impact of our programming, continually responding to the evolving needs of those we serve. Through partnerships, volunteer efforts, and community collaboration, Teetotal Initiative seeks to normalize sober living as an empowering and joyful choice. We believe that everyone deserves access to supportive spaces that celebrate sobriety and encourage people to build resilient, meaningful lives—free from stigma, full of possibility, and connected by shared experience.
