About the event

The evening is a prestigious black tie fund-raiser commemorating the Fleet Air Arm’s greatest battle, in which it sank the Italian Fleet in the Bay of Taranto. According to Admiral Cunningham, the commander of the operation; "Taranto, and the night of November 11–12, 1940, should be remembered forever as having shown once and for all that in the Fleet Air Arm the Navy has its most devastating weapon".

Therefore, the Fleet Air Arm celebrates this battle every year with a Mess Dinner. This Dinner is accompanied by a light-hearted re-enactment of the battle by one of the Squadrons and we are lucky enough to have serving officers from 815 Squadron (a Taranto Squadron) attending our dinner to perform their version of the events that took place during the battle. This will be informative, amusing and explosive and therefore will make the evening a unique and entertaining event, the likes of which you will never have seen before!

Guests will enjoy pre-dinner champagne and canapés in the splendid ante-rooms before dining in the opulent Livery Hall. The evening will also include a live auction including a range of once-in-a-lifetime experiences including a Sea Fury experience, a VIP day at sea in a Royal Navy Frigate and a day with the Lynx Wildcat Helicopter Force along with a silent auction of other lots including as some fabulous aviation memorabilia.

The Taranto story of the Royal Navy’s iconic historic aircraft make the Swordfish a priceless national asset, of world heritage status. Swordfish W5856 has recently undergone restoration as a result of a generous benefactor donating £200K last year, along with extensive engineering support from BAeS. It is the oldest surviving Swordfish in the world and we are now attempting to get its sister-ship back in the air as well. Places are available at £5000 for a table of ten and individual seats at £550 each. Last year we raised £136,000 on the night and this year we are aiming to reach our target of £150,000 to help keep these iconic aircraft in the air; we lose these remarkable vintage aircraft and the incredible history they tell, at our peril.
