  • About the event

    SOUTHALL MELA

    15TH MAY 2016

SOUTHALL PARK, BOYD AVENUE, SOUTHALL, UB1 3BT

Southall Mela 2016 takes place on 15th May 2016 at Southall Park in West London and is set to kick off London’s mela season in style. This one-day event in the heart of West London’s biggest Asian community is expected to draw thousands of visitors from across London and the South East and as far afield as Luton and Birmingham. Southall is the epicentre of Asian culture and widely heralded as the birthplace of today’s UK Asian music and fashion scene. A rich tapestry of various Asian cultures unites to form the Southall community, which is famous for its entertainment, shopping culture and cuisine.

This year’s event will see top Asian artistes performing live on our grand outdoor stage and an engaging range of attractions have been booked to keep adults and children alike entertained throughout the day. A mela can’t happen without food and shopping and Southall Mela 2016 will not disappoint. With over a hundred stalls selling everything from Asian clothes and jewellery to hot biryanis and barbecues, savoury snacks, toys and homeware, Southall Park will become the destination for choice and value for money on 15th May 2016. The mela will harbour a safe, family environment being an alcohol free event with a strict stop and search policy.

Channi Singh will be headlining Southall Mela 2016. Harcharanjit Singh Rupal OBE, known professionally as Channi Singh, is a British-Indian bhangra musician, known as the "godfather" of bhangra in the West.[ Channi is the founder, lead singer, producer, and director of Alaap. He came from Malerkotla, Punjab to the UK in 1975 and gradually started the popularity of Punjabi music among the Punjabi youth in the UK, forming the Alaap group in 1977 with other talented musicians. By using both Western and Punjabi folk instruments, the group produced a new and more modern style in Punjabi music, later known as UK Bhangra.

His daughter, Mona Singh, has followed in his footsteps and will also be performaing at Southall Mela 2016.

Singh was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to bhangra music, charity and the community in Hounslow. In mid 2012 Channi signed a worldwide publishing deal with independent music publishers Fairwood Music.

Leading up to Channi Singh will be a line-up of over 20 artistes, all delivering a wide range of music and performances from the Asian Sub-Continent.

This year’s event will be promoted and publicised across West London, home to over 450,000 people of Asian background and across the UK using social media and television. With an expected turnover of around 15,000 to 20,000 people at the event and promotion and publicity before, during and after the event, this free, fun family extravaganza will provide your organisation with the opportunity to reach an increasingly affluent and growing community.

Southall Mela Ltd is a registered company which organises community events and gives back to local charities based in the UK, supporting community projects that benefit the surrounding area and people.

Southall Mela Ltd is the brainchild of local resident and entrepreneur, Mr Shofiqul Alam. Mr Alam started Southall Vision in 2013 to give back to the local community that has been a big part of his life and help elevate the Ealing community through education, outreach work, support and aid. He has launched Southall Mela to bring the community together in a fun environment and at the same time raise funds for charities in the UK. In 2014, Southall mela proved to be an amazing event, evidenced on our website in photos and videos!
