'Put Ya Mama Where Ya Mouth Is!' (PYMWYMI) celebrates the woman that many of us would argue rivals just about anyone else in the kitchen - our mother! A cooking competition with a twist, PYMWYMI pairs six adult children with their mother, aunt, grandma, etc to create a soul food side dish that will potentially win them the title of 'Cast Iron Queen of Detroit' for 2017. A pure democracy, PYMWYMI offers the winner the title and a $500 grand prize. Set in a boxing arena, the event possesses a competitive spirit based on its setting and the sensitivity of one's respect for their mother's cooking. A well-respected chef from a local establishment will provide the main dish and attendees will vote on the six dishes to crown our winner. In the boxing ring during the event, there will be constant performances, sparring, advertising and engagement by our two hosts. We hope to attain drink sponsorship as to offer our attendees open bar.
Our consumer base is built greatly from an inaugural event that we created in August of 2017; The first ever Metro Detroit Black Restaurant Week! We engaged over 10,000 people during the week of August 21-27 and that same crowd is eagerly anticipating more food-based programming from us. This event is a no-brainer because brings together food, nostalgia, competition and potentially, spirits!
I am Kwaku Osei-Bonsu, creator of BlackMetroEats.com, the organizer of Metro Detroit Black Restaurant Week, and an all around, bonafide foodie. I understand the emotional side of food and how its linked to everything that makes us laugh, cry and everything in between.
