About the event

It is with great pleasure that we personally invite you to the Prestigious Haitian Music Awards. This red carpet event will take place on January 7, 2017 at the Miramar Cultural Center in Miramr, FL.

We specifically chose this date because of its proximity to Haiti's Independence Day (January 1st, 1804) and we want to continue promoting the beauty, courage, and resilience of our people.

The awards show will celebrate the advancements of those in the Haitian Music Industry. Awards will be given to Haitian solo artists, bands, full albums, songs, and more. There will be live performances, special presentations, and special legacy tributes.

Our goal is to have an annual platform to showcase the remarkable talents of our Haitian musical artists. With your support, we will be able to capture this grand event and further promote Haitian music and its rich culture to the masses worldwide.

This event is set to air live on television. Times and local listings will be announced closer to the event's date.

Why should you sponsor?

This event aims to strengthen ties in the Haitian community while uplifting a long ignored industry.

On the Haitian Music Industry:

In the early days of the Haitian Music Industry, musicians put together bands that would play merengue songs in French. However, during the 1950s, musicians began to slow down the tempo and incorporate instruments not typically used in merengue such as the conga and floor tom. In July 26, 1955, Nemours Jean-Baptiste created the rhythm that was to become the “Compas” in forming his own musical group, Conjunto International. As the genre of Compas began to distinguish itself from merengue, several bands emerged out of Haiti with the sole purpose of simply spreading the music through the country for people to enjoy.

However, as times advanced, the lack of political stability, socioeconomic disadvantages and stagnant business climate in Haiti prevented the Haitian Music Industry to progress to a level where they could sustain the industry outside of its grassroots nature. In essence, the Haitian Music Industry was developed only in the community, but was virtually nonexistent on paper.

We believe that in the midst of the positive efforts of unifying and uplifting a people, this event would provide an exciting marketing opportunity for your business while showing your support and understanding for peoples of the diaspora.

Prestigious Haitian Music Awards

Prestigious Haitian Music Awards intends to bring awareness to the Haitian musical talents that have served our country throughout the years. Haiti has developed a variety of musical styles to express the various situations the country has faced since earning independence in 1804.

The Prestigious Haitian Music Awards website will host the voting process that will begin shortly. Our voting categories will consist of artists from the 1970’s all the way to the current artist of the 21^st century. If there are any questions associated with this event. This event will be held in the beautiful city of Miami, where the Haitian population is extremely vibrant and present, with Haitians making up a majority of the foreign Black population.

Immigrants from Haiti represent a small but growing share of the total foreign-born population in the United States, tripling in number between 1990 and 2012. The Haitian immigrant population stood at 606,000 in 2012, up from 200,000 in 1990; Haitians now constitute 1.5% of the total U.S. foreign-born population. The foreign-born from Haiti residing in the United States are most concentrated in Florida and New York. These two states were home to more than 70% of Haitian immigrants in the 2008-12 period. The major metropolitan areas where Haitian immigrants resided include the greater Miami, New York, Boston, Orlando, and Atlanta areas. These five metro areas accounted for nearly three-quarters of the total immigrant population from Haiti residing in the United States. According to World Bank data, total remittances sent to Haiti via formal channels equaled $1.6 billion in 2012, representing 21% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The amount of remittances received by Haiti increased tenfold since the late 1980's.
