Mary Eliza Mahoney Nursing Scholarship Event,

Fresno, California, United States Fresno, California, United States

  • About the event

The Central Valley Black Nurses Association Inc will have a nursing scholarship event to provide scholarships to African American students who are pursuing a career in nursing. We provide scholarships to students currently enrolled in an accredited Licensed Vocational (LVN) or Registered Nursing (RN) Program. During this event we will also honor local trailblazers, nurses who have made great contributions to the profession of nursing. Through their service in local, state and national programs, we are honoring seven nurses who served as change agents through their many years of service to the community.

    Why should you sponsor?

This event will help foster economic support to students who are pursuing a degree in nursing. Currently, there is a shortage of nurses nationwide and through this and future events we can provide much needed financial support to those in nursing programs, but also expose students who may be thinking about a career in nursing. Those who sponsor this event will indeed help support students, families and the communities in which they serve.

    erica alexander

My name is Erica Alexander, I am the vice-president of the Central Valley Black Nurses Association. I have over 14 years of experience as a nurse, starting my career pediatrics, then moving on to public health. I started my career as a certified nurses assistant back in 1991 and worked my way up the ladder, learning new skills as a phlebotomist then as a Health Unit Secretary in a fast paced children's hospital. Often, I functioned in those roles simultaneously and was stretched to my limits, but learned the value of multi-tasking, time management, conflict resolution, peer support and team building. That particular experience helped guide my nursing philosophy that respectful, kind and nurturing care is all people want when faced with an unexpected medical crisis. I now work in public health, as a supervisor for maternal child health programs working in the community with people from different cultures, background and environments. I am passionate about reducing health disparities and improving the landscape for our future women, children and families.
