The majority of UK travellers are not aware of the potentially serious health risks before heading overseas. Many of them don’t even pack an insect repellent! In response to this, Bug Off! was launched by arctec and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2013. Bug Off! is an campaign with a wide programme of events taking place over the summer. We are seeking to hold our largest and most ambitious campaign this summer, especially at a time where mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika and malaria are of such a large concern.
Our aim is to save lives through creating a loud buzz around staying safe whilst travelling abroad and through doing this, save lives. Bug Off! has a light-hearted, fun approach through an exciting, interactive and entertaining programme of activities, but with an important health message at its heart. We are on a mission to give travellers the information and tools they need to stay safe when abroad!
This year we are on a mission to raise awareness of the Zika virus and its devastating consequences on unborn children. Some of our activities are designed to raise money for charities that support families affected by Zika.
The Bug Off! Campaign also offers a unique opportunity to reassure travellers and prepare them with the right knowledge to stay safe when abroad.

The Bug Off! campaign was created by arctec, an independent centre for development and evaluation of insect control products, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. arctec is a world-leading authority on the control of insect-borne diseases. The team is led by director Dr James Logan – a Senior Lecturer in Medical Entomology at the School, who is also part of the School’s Task Force on Zika and advises the government and regulatory agencies on protection against mosquito borne diseases. He is also a TV presenter on the BBC and Channel 4’s BAFTA Award winning series Embarrassing Bodies. The campaign will involve many staff members from the School and our partner organisations, who have specialist expertise in travel health.
