Our organization isn’t driven by financial support and messaging of a large corporate entity/business. Everything is community-based and people-driven. We're hoping you will partner with us to reach the goal of 500 Backpacks & School Supplies for Pre-K to 12th grade in the community of Richmond
My name is Marcus Byrd-Ray Sr. I am a 30-year-old Richmond, California native and father of five children. I graduated from De Anza Senior High school in 2007. Previously, I was part of the problems that perpetuated crime and gun violence in Richmond. However, while on probation I became involved with Ceasefire - a gun violence prevention program. Ceasefire offered me an opportunity of a lifetime, helping me change my life for the better and develop a new trajectory. I have countless childhood friends that have been murdered or that are currently doing life in prison. Sadly, this is not an uncommon experience for many youth in Richmond (and surrounding communities). Hence, I decided to develop a framework to not only improve myself, but also provide positive alternatives for the youth in our communities. Ceasefire enabled me to develop a new perspective that went beyond my own experiences and my own family. They introduced me to a coordinator from Alive and Free - Omega Boys Club who motivated me to further my education. Alive and Free is a youth development and violence prevention program that focuses on ensuring youth/young adults are afforded a life free of harm, and become contributing members of society. One component of Alive and Free is the Omega Boys Club, which provides young adults a chance to change their lives via scholarships for a college education, mentorship, and workshops. I am currently attending Laney College majoring in Psychology with plans to transfer to Cal State East Bay upon completion. My past lifestyle only contributed to the nuances within Richmond. However, with the recent opportunities and pursuit of a college education, I am now focusing on solutions to help others whose lives are also conflicted with the deadly temptations easily accessible in Richmond. Furthermore, I want to take preventative measures that demonstrate value in an education and community fellowship. I am in the process of starting my non-profit organization mentoring young men and women, Change4FiveHundred.
