  • About the event

#YESWEREAD is a summer reading program that introduces our youth to authors that have written specifically for their age group.  It is our hope that this program will demonstrate literacy, analytical and critical thinking skills to our youth.    The summer program will be in June with the meeting dates for the youth on June 20th and June 27th.

We have scheduled speakers and activties to discuss the book.  The book the group will be reading is Somewhere in the Darkness by Walter Dean Myers.   This year we have partnered with Monarch NC and we will be hosting youth and adult learners with special needs for our reading program.

    Why should you sponsor?

Sports Leadership Academy, Inc. is committed to our community to provide literacy, sports, tutoring and any community awareness.  We are very excited to partner with Monarch NC to get the word out about their services.  Sports Leadership Academy, Inc. has hosted a #yesweread in 2015 and also sponsored a fundraiser for Parkland High School football team with a 5k.

We are hoping to partner with our sponsors to continue to provide a sense of unity and pride in our community.  Our goal is to provide a safe haven that will be beneficial to everyone involved.

This is only the begininng with Sports Leadership Academy, Inc. and we are looking forward to being a permanent fixture in the community.

    Karen Bowman

My name is Karen Bowman and I am the Reading Program Director with Sports Leadership Academy, Inc. Reading has always been a passion of mind and I think it is very important that children literacy continue all year round.  #Yesweread was founded to enhance book discussion in the summer for boys and girls.

In 2005 I graduated with a BS of Accounting from High Point University and I founded Sistahs of Urban Literature Book Club in January 2009.  Sistahs of Urban Literature Book Club meets monthly and sometimes with host authors.  As the founder of this book club, it was very important to me that we had a book club for young girls in which we hosted Its A Girl Thing for two years.

Even though I do not have any biological children, I have made a personal mission to give the youth something positive to do in the summer time.  The interaction between the volunteers and myself has been so rewarding in which the parents have been asking us to continue to the program throughout the year.

Sports Leadership Academy, Inc. is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization and we looking for working with all of our future sponsors.
