About the event

Salinas Valley Comic Con 2018 will be held at Hartnell College Student Center, with additional programming and exhibits at the Salinas Public Library. With approximately 900 in attendance and over three dozen participating speakers and presenters, the event highlights and cultivates positive youth energy with a focus on creative literacy as art. 

What’s more, Salinas Valley Comic Con accentuates the fact that comics and graphic novels help to improve literacy skills. Just as John Steinbeck himself loved the quest of King Arthur, readers of all ages can be transported to other worlds to follow the adventures of their favorite characters through comics. This sense of engaged adventure leads to a greater appreciation of the written word and inspires continued, regular practice with reading and writing. 

As Steinbeck noted about comic strips in the mid-1950s—a claim that holds true today--“Comic strips might be the real literature of our time.” We hope you will join us in 2018!

The National Steinbeck Center is a museum and 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Salinas, CA that honors Nobel prize winning author John Steinbeck. The National Steinbeck Center houses a variety of artifacts, first edition Steinbeck books, newspapers, and interviews pertaining to John Steinbeck in its archives. In addition, the National Steinbeck Center holds a variety of educational and public programs throughout the year which aim to expand the public’s knowledge about John Steinbeck and the themes he explored in his books.
