SKIN- a theatrical production in American Sign Language,

12th Avenue Arts, Seattle, Washington, United States 12th Avenue Arts, Seattle, Washington, United States

  • About the event

In May 2017, Deaf Spotlight will produce SKIN, a play by Crystal Green, a emerging Deaf playwright. This production is unique in that it will be written, acted, directed and produced by members of the Deaf community in American Sign Language (ASL). The production will focus on a specific subculture of the Deaf community - Deaf lesbians. The focus of the play is the complexities and intersectionality of four women’s lives: Deaf, Lesbian, friend, lover, and supporter.  This will be at the 12th Ave Arts Mainstage.

With a cast of four women, the play will be directed by Alexandria Wailes, a Deaf director. She has 15 years of extensive experience as an actor, choreographer, and director. Her awards include: Tony Honors for Excellence Recipient - 2004, Broadway play of Big River (Joanna/ensemble) 2003, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, 2007 and a LA Ovation Awards nomination.

    Why should you sponsor?

Deaf Spotlight inspires, encourages, and showcases creative works of, by, and for Deaf people in the Pacific Northwest through events that celebrate Deaf culture and American Sign Language.

Come and support a local, emerging Deaf nonprofit organization featuring talented Deaf art professionals and their works. Not often we have opportunities to see our stories and perspectives on the stage in American Sign Language (ASL). Consider this an enriching experience of our daily lives as people interacting and living as Deaf people.

There will be 7 performances: preview, four evenings and two matinees.  The peformance run will be from May 3-6 and 12-14, 2017. We are anticipating at least 90 people per performance.  All performances will be accessible either by captioning and/or voice interpreters.
