Sensorium is a metal-classical crossover project, arranging metal songs for voice, string quartet, piano and chamber choir. With your help, we will hold a 90-minute concert where a spin is put on both classic heavy metal songs as well as more obscure pieces from lesser-known composers.
----
Metal is regularly viewed as 'just noise', with almost every metalhead having at least a handful of stories where they have been told: "It's just screaming", "Metal takes no talent" or "It all sounds the same" (to name but a few). These are all misconceptions that should be broken, and we intend to break them by performing heavy songs in ways that are more appealing to non-metal fans to showcase that the music is often virtuosic, melodic and most importantly valid as a genre.
----
We wish for our concerts to be as inclusive as possible, as attending classical music concerts can be somewhat daunting for first-timers who may not necessarily understand the etiquette. Sensorium will provide a safe space for these attendees by engaging with a more relaxed approach to audience etiquette (in comparison to classical concerts), which is ever-present within metal subculture. This inclusivity is to be extended to the music itself. As metal tends to be male-dominated, we wish to showcase music which has been written by women and other underrepresented groups.

Adam: "Sensorium is an extension to the research I am currently undertaking at Trinity Laban. Classical-Metal crossover has always been a passion of mine and I have been lucky enough to pursue this in both academic writing (A History of Symphonic Metal [Documentary] and placing extreme metal vocal technique within the context of Western-style classical singing) and in live performance (Mozart Meets Metallica). This project was incredibly well received and provided key ideas and resources that are being carried forward into Sensorium."

As the arts face more and more funding cuts, projects like these are incredibly hard to put on due to the costs involved. Your sponsorship will help to provide the musical equipment which is necessary for an event of this nature as well as ensuring early-career musicians are paid at Music Union Rates!
Bass-Baritone Adam Gammie began his musical journey in Scotland before moving to London to study under Eamonn Mulhall at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Recent engagements include Antonio and Le Conte in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Shakespeare in Try Me Good King as well as chorus roles in Verdi's La Traviata and MacBeth.
Adam takes a keen interest in classical crossover projects, taking part in Mozart Meets Metallica - a Trinity Laban CoLab project in which heavy metal songs were interpreted by woodwind and classical voice. This was the launching point for his research into the physiology of metal singing and how it interrelates to Western Bel Canto Technique.
