Second Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch,

Gent Glas, Gent, Vlaanderen, Belgium Gent Glas, Gent, Vlaanderen, Belgium

  • About the event

In 2019, Gent Glas hosted its first ever Glass Pumpkin Patch! Last year, the first apprentices of Gent Glas created unique, handmade pumpkins to raise money for their apprenticeship program, as well as accrue time to practice their craft and develop a team-working model. The apprentice program supports students who graduate from an artistic training in glass and need a place to work, grow, and professionalize after their education has culminated. The program gives the apprentices the necessary tools to own, operate, and maintain a glass studio and business.

The first Pumpkin Patch (FUN)dRaiser showcased over 200 hand-made glass pumpkins , raised over 9000€, and drew nearly 150 visitors to this inaugural event. The proceeds from the sales helped cover the costs of three apprentices last year to work and learn at Gent Glas.

    Why should you sponsor?

2020 will be even better! On October 4th, Gent Glas will again transform its interior into an autumn fantasy landscape showcasing hand-made, unique glass pumpkins made by the artists from our first apprentice program and new participants. There will be over 450 pumpkins ranging in size, shape, color, design, and price. Each of the first three apprentices will also create their own unique line of pumpkins. Promotion for the event will begin in August, and beginning in September, we will sell raffle tickets for a special piece designed and made by the apprentices. During the live event, we will auction off the pieces being made in real time, creating an exciting opportunity to support each of these artists individually.

Established in Gent in 2014, Gent Glas is a public glass studio intent on building a dynamic professional learning community of Belgian glass makers and international contemporary artists, designers, and craftsmen. Gent Glas was founded on the principle of sharing knowledge and spreading its vision of glass as a contemporary art medium. The studio operates year-round as a professional glassmaking studio, an educational space for students and aspiring artists, and a community space for members of the public to witness glassmaking in action.

Over the past five years, Gent Glas has introduced more than 700 people to glass through hands-on workshops and countless more thorough our weekly live events. For the past two years, Gent Glas has launched a successful internship program, allowing rising glass artists the opportunity to receive mentorship from professional artists and contribute to the day-to-day running of a professional glass studio. From this program, three of the participants have either relocated to Gent or stayed on to work at Gent Glas. Gent Glas has received support from the Flemish Ministry of Jeugd, Sport en Media, including State of the Art and Experimental Youth Work subsidies, as well as generating revenue from studio activities and support from private donors.
