McAuliffe is an Expeditionary Learning school for grades six through eight. McAuliffe’s hands-on curriculum inspires high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. McAuliffe is a diverse community of engaged, motivated learners — students and adults alike. At McAuliffe, students take ownership of their learning, guided by creative, passionate adults who navigate the balancing act of challenge and support. The school’s supportive Crew model (10-12 scholars with an faculty advisor) reinforces a climate of physical and emotional safety. The community values independence and individuality, while practicing collaboration, inclusivity, and acceptance.

McAuliffe opened in September 2002 as the first charter middle school to serve students living in the MetroWest area. In January 2012, the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE)  renewed the school’s charter through June 2017. The BESE voted unanimously to renew the school as a result of McAuliffe’s fidelity to the mission of its charter, evidenced academic success, and strong organizational viability.

The Expeditionary Learning model challenges students to think critically and to take active roles in their classrooms and communities, resulting in higher achievement and greater engagement in school. EL provides schools with professional development, coaching, and on-line tools to improve curriculum design, instruction, school culture, leadership, and assessment practices. The national network of EL schools and professional colleagues includes 165 schools, 4,000 teachers, and 45,000 students.

Founded by Michael Delman and Robert Kaufman, McAuliffe opened in September 2002 as the Framingham Community Charter School, the first charter middle school serving the MetroWest. During the 2005 school year, the school became a regional charter school, opening its doors to students from Framingham, Natick, Ashland, Holliston, Sudbury, Southborough, Hopkinton, and Marlborough.

In 2005, the school was also renamed to honor Christa McAuliffe, a native of Framingham, graduate of Framingham State College, accomplished teacher, and astronaut. Her life exemplified the values of adventure and discovery, and her legacy illustrates for young people that with training and teamwork we can overcome challenges that would otherwise seem insurmountable.

In June 2005, McAuliffe graduated its first class of eighth grade students. Those students have now graduated from high school and are attending prestigious colleges including M.I.T., Williams, Dartmouth, UMass Amherst, and the University of Chicago.

In May 2012, McAuliffe was renewed by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) through 2017. Six months later, the BESE approved the schools request to increase enrollment from 306 to 396 students, a result of increased demand in the MetroWest community for a school effectively embracing both academic and character development for middle school scholars.
