“It’s A Deaf Thing” is a capstone event for September’s Deaf Awareness Month. provides the unique opportunity for Florida’s estimated 200,000 Deaf to gather and celebrate their culture and share their perspectives and increase awareness of Deaf issues.
The inaugural event, scheduled for Saturday, September 30 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, FL features products, and services. Additionally, an art and craft show showcasing products by and for the Deaf Community runs the full day. A talent show at 6:00 PM is the grand finale to a full day celebrating the Deaf Community.
“It’s a Deaf Thing” is the only known event of its kind across the state of Florida, and is expected to feature more than 50 Deaf-owned and Deaf-focused businesses, and to celebrate the culture and increase awareness of Deaf issues. “I am excited to present this opportunity for the Deaf Community across Florida to have a place to gather and connect with each other and showcase their skills,” says David Lind, NIC, President, ProjectDEAF.
Since this is our inaugural event, it is difficult for us to predict attendance. However, interest is already high. Our event, registered with EventBrite, has already seen registrations for our free tickets statewide. Previous events like this regularly attracted 2,000+ members of the Deaf community from across the state of Florida.

ProjectDEAF's primary mission is to support and empower the Deaf Community through a variety of programs and services. Planned activities include Deaf exhibition/cultural event, pro bono interpreting services, and ad hoc advocacy efforts. ProjectDEAF is a newly formed organization based in the state of Florida, but our board and volunteers have many years of experience working in and for the Deaf Community.
