About the event
Each March, our chapter holds a two week philanthropy event called Derby Days to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. This year we have set our goal for raising $20,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. Throughout each event, our MC's really stress the importance of cancer research and how we are the generation to end cancer. We connect charity with competition on a personal level as each and every one of us is somehow connected to the effects of cancer. This year Derby Days consists of four main events:
The first event is called Derby Darling and it is like a pageant like competition featuring two ladies from each sorority. Contestants compete in a talent portion, question period, and a dress competition. After which the judges crown a Derby Darling 2019. Between each event are mini events, which could utilize company sponsorship. Last year we had several in kind donation giveaways, as well as competitions for donations.
The second event is Airbands, a dance compeititon between the sororities competing for points towards the final Derby Days crown. Between dances, we will be holding a live auction where we will be auctioning off items that could use donation support or in kind donations to be auctioned off.
The third event is our first annual Sigma Chi Sledge Hockey Tournament in partnership with ParaSport Ontario. We have teamed up with representatives from members of Para-Olympic Canada and Para Sport Ontario to have this event.
Our fourth and final event, Greek Olympics is a combination of events that will culminate to crown one sorority as our 2019 Derby Days champtionships. Events ranging from chariot race and pie eating competition, this event is a perfect opportunity for a company to gain brand recognition through banners or photos around the venue. This would also be an excellent opportunity for a drink sponsor as it is the one event we do not hold at a bar.
Why should you sponsor?
Every year Derby Days is a time where our chapter along with the five sororities at Western University get together to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. It is the most anticipated greek-life event annually, and garners a bigger audience than any other greek event.
Besides a charitable outreach, a company might be interested in sponsoring our event because of the target audience of university students. This is the future of the young working adult population, many of which will be joining the workforce next year.
At each of the events, we can recognize any donating company in several ways. In the past we have used banners and posters to promote sponsors. We have had several giveaways in the forms of ticketed giveaways, competition winners and silent auctions and look to expand that this year.
This year we are truly trying to reach our goal of $20,000 and I hope that we will be able to do that with your help.
My name is Simon McEvoy, and I am a fourth year Honours Political Science student at the University of Western Ontario. This is my second year as the philanthropy chair of Sigma Chi, and as a graduating student I am committed to attaining our goal.
In my family alone, I have had several family members diognosed with cancer and unfortunately more than half of those have not beaten this terrible disease. Not only that, I have several friends as young as me who have been diagnosed and some of which have not made it. The Huntsman Cancer Institute is a breakthrough research and treatment facility that Sigma Chi has pledged as its sole philanthropic cause.
If anyone would like to speak further to me about my story, or about this sponsorship opportunity please feel free to reach out to me at the listed information.
