2017 Man & Woman of the Year,

Greenville, South Carolina, United States Greenville, South Carolina, United States

  • About the event

Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn LLS’s "Man & Woman of the Year" titles by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks.

    Why should you sponsor?

Because it makes sense for your business and for the community! The life-saving work of LLS is only possible through the generous and dedicated support of individuals and businesses. As a Man & Woman of the Year campaign sponsor, your company affirms its commitment to supporting the more than 1.2 million Americans living with blood cancers, and ensures the continuation of research vital to the eradication of blood cancer for future generations.

I have been given the opportunity of a lifetime to help others.

Each year The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) launches its Man & Woman of the Year fundraising campaign, and I was honored to join this year’s efforts as a nominated 2017 man of the year candidate for Team One Step Closer. I am writing today to ask for your support of LLS’s mission in its efforts to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle this disease.

From February 23rd –May 4th, our team goal is to raise $75,000 which will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding mission to find cures and ensure patients access to the treatments they need. If we raise over $100,000 by May 4th, we can link our team name to an LLS-funded research portfolio this year to honor our efforts to help people with blood cancers.

In addition to my wife’s career as a pediatric nurse, I have also recently witnessed first-hand the debilitating effects that blood cancers such as leukemia can have on those who suffer from these blood cancers, and on the friends and family who care for and nurture their loved ones. Just this past year, we lost our dear 8-year-old rock star and friend Skyla to AML. In fact, leukemia still causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20.

But there is something we can do, there are many reasons to be proud to support LLS’s efforts. For instance, of the 39 new cancer-fighting drugs approved by the F.D.A. in the past 10 years, 19 of them were initially developed for blood cancers and many had funding from LLS. Of those 19, ALL of them show promise for treating other cancer

This is an organization that is doing the right things with the dollars it raises, and I’m proud to be associated with LLS. This is where you come in. There are many ways to help. Please use the link in this letter, or the enclosed response form, to make a tax deductible contribution to LLS. If you’d like to mail your donation, our address is below. Should you donate online at: http://teamonestepcloser.org you will receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation. You can also help by donating a silent or live auction item, or purchase tickets to the Man & Woman of the Year Grand Finale on May 4th.

Then, I’d ask you to reach out to others you know and ask them to do the same. I have found that so many of the people I talk to about our team’s efforts have a connection to cancer and want to get involved.

I thank you in advance for supporting this incredible need. I’ll let you know how the campaign goes. For now, I am forever grateful for your friendship and support. And please remember, with every dollar donated, we’re one step closer to finding a cure.
