  • About the event

HagaMUN, or Haganum Model United Nations, is an annual weekend-long international event held at our school and other local venues since 2010. HagaMUN aims to facilitate students with a passion for debate and hopes to give them experience on globally relevant matters. This year’s conference will take place on the 10th, 11th and 12th of March 2023, at Gymnasium Haganum, located in The Hague.

At a MUN, participants simulate the United Nations. Each participant receives the role of a country, ranging from the United States of America to Equatorial Guinea. During the debates in various committees and on various topics, the delegates assume the position of a UN diplomat, representing their countries to the best of their abilities. This raises awareness among students about both future and current global issues, but also allows them to see these topics from many different viewpoints.

The theme for our upcoming conference will be “Preventing and reducing the adverse effects of climate change on vulnerable communities”. The conference will partly be dedicated to this theme, and will engage its participants on this topic in numerous ways. This means that there will be a large variety of issues and topics discussed in the committees concerning the safety and rights of marginalized communities, with a special focus on challenges caused by climate change.

HagaMUN gives students with different backgrounds and beliefs an opportunity to share their ideas and to cooperate on complex geopolitical problems. Today's youth will work towards finding the best solutions for these problems by working together and thinking of strategies that are able to satisfy each country’s delegation.

In addition to this, we will sell merchandise to support a charity focused on environmental protection and preservation. Donation boxes will be made available to participants and we will have guest speakers help raise awareness for climate change as well.

    Why should you sponsor?

Receiving a grant from the US embassy would be crucial to set up the HagaMUN. In previous years, the HagaMUN was funded by the combination of participation fees and the Haganum school. In 2022 the school paid around €5000, but due to new management of our school this funding has been stopped, and without this it is not feasible to organize a proper MUN conference. It is also impossible to support the conference with only participation fees as it is our goal to have this MUN be available and affordable for students around the world.

We have many students and teachers at our school willing to organize the HagaMUN in future years. In order for our conference to continue to grow, we hope to acquire more long-term partners and sponsors. We have many hard working students on our finance team that are currently looking for companies and organizations willing to aid us in our goal of setting up an amazing HagaMUN conference for this year and years to come.

The United Nations is an organisation that brings countries all around the world closer together in a way any other organisation has never been able to. However, due to the size of the issues that are being discussed within the United Nations, it is difficult for the youth to be involved and to feel like their opinions matter. This is the reason our HagaMUN-secretary has come together to organise the thirteenth HagaMUN. This is a great event in which hundreds of students from many countries discuss present-day worldwide issues with each other.

The event is being organised by Gymnasium Haganum, a school in The Hague. After the arrival of all of the delegates, the debaters, on friday and after they have received their badges and documents, the weekend will begin with an opening ceremony. This ceremony contains speeches of experts in the field of geopolitics and the United Nations, and the official kick-off of the amazing weekend to come!

Hereafter, the debating will begin. Every student represents a country that they may or may not have knowledge about. The goal of not just representing your own country, but having to step out of your comfort zone, is to get each student to do research about their country and to help them understand that being able to think from a different perspective is very important in politics and in everyday life. All students will be thinking actively about assigned issues with other students representing the same country. This is a busy day, so in the evening, every student gets the chance to discover the beautiful The Hague with the sun setting. Of course, they will have to get to bed on time, because another busy day is at the doorstep!

Saturday Morning, the debates will be resumed. Delegates are now allowed to share their ideas about issues which will be either rejected or adjusted to fit the norms of the United Nations. All these issues will be collected in one official document. After a delicious lunch, arranged for by our own catering-team, this same activity will be continued in the afternoon. At the end of the day, when all delegates have left the building, the Staff prepares the HagaMUN party, which is the perfect place to enjoy the evening, without your suit on!

When the last day arrives, everybody will join together to present all their solutions for the issues that have been set up in the previous days. This last debate will end with the closing ceremony, during which all presidents of the debates will report on the weekend and the conference will be officially closed.

This conference is a unique experience for all attendants. We hope to put together an unforgettable event after all the difficult years of Covid-19, but without help of sponsors, the organising of this event will, sadly, not be possible.
