ZaSCI Seaweed Day,

About the event

The event is an exhibition day where women and men members of the Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative (ZaSCI) who are seaweed farmers and small-scale processors display the various seaweed products from cosmetics to food, and seaweed farming stages from planting to selling and making seaweed products. Some products are made on site. The general public is invited to visit the exhibition.  

Why should you sponsor?

Since the start of ZaSCI in 2006 we have tried to make the general public and policy makers to see the potential of our crop-the seaweed- and its potential for value addition. This has been difficult because we did not have funds. Milele Zanzibar Foundation came in to sponsor the first (2016) and second (2017) ZaSCI Seawed Days. This year we intend to hold the Day. MZF has shown interest in funding. However, we usually reach a small audience in Zanzibar and not being able to reach others in e.g. Pemba and mainland Tanzania who we very much want to reach. We are, thus, looking for sponsorship to reach a wider audience to let them know about the potential of using our seaweed that we farm. The women will be happy to interact with a wider audience-this will increase their market as well. Your sponsorship is very important-put a smile on these women's faces!

I am a Resercher and Chairperson of the Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative (ZaSCI). I started ZaSCI in 2006 having seen the potential of using the seaweed that is produced in the country. In 2006 there were no seaweed products in the country-none at all. My efforts have resulted in more than 50 seaweed products made by seaweed farmers (80% women!). All this work with ZaSCI is voluntary-I do not get paid. In my research work I have worked with seaweed farmers in applied research and these have become the beneficiaries of my research results. I have worked as a resercher for 30 years and published more than 50 papers and I supervise students as well.
