This AI Life,

London, England, United Kingdom London, England, United Kingdom

  • About the event

This is the second annual conference examining the impact of AI on our lives bringing together leading scientists, opinion formers, politicians, thinkers and the media to discuss the changes that the technology will make on our lives and what we need to do to ensure that AI works in the best interests of people.

Like last year’s conference this event is being jointly organised with the international law firm Cooley and the Institution of Engineering Technology and will be held at the IET’s London HQ by the side of the Thames at 2, Savoy Place, London, on October 3rd 2018.

Last year’s conference ‘Artificial Intelligence: Living and Working in an AI world’ drew an audience of over 250 people to hear presentations from leading AI scientists, such as Bath University’s Professor Joanna Bryson and Justin Lyon of Simudyne who worked on AI modelling for the Bank of England, leading thinkers on the ramifications of the technology such as the venture capitalist Nathan Benaich, and Anthony Painter, Director of the Action and Research Centre at the Royal Society of Arts who produced a report at the request of the Government on the subject of AI.

Speakers also included politicians such as Mary Honeyball, MEP for London among a number of other academics and thinkers who addressed an audience of leading decision makers from politics, industry, academia, the media and the legal world.

Speakers at this year’s conference include Lord Clement Jones, chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on AI, Sir Dermot Turing nephew of computing pioneer Alan Turing, often described as the Father of modern computing, leading AI scientist Jana Eggars, Dr Adrian Weller, Programme Director of the Turing Institute and a number of other leading AI thinkers.

What is different about the Cooley, Future Intelligence, Institution of Engineering Technology Conference, which is to be renamed after Professor Donald Michie one of the UK’s leading computer scientists, is its focus which is a pragmatic assessment of where AI technology is, where it is going, what that means and what we must do to ensure it works to improve people’s lives.

It is this focus on ethics that makes the conference unique and is the reason that it attracted journalists from all of the leading broadcasters and broadsheets last year and representatives from the House of Lords Select Committee on AI.

Indeed, according to the Clerk to the Committee it prompted the Select Committee to research and produce, ‘AI in the UK: Ready, willing and able?’ it’s latest report into the technology.

It is for this reason that the conference and its associated report and video presents a unique opportunity for companies in the technology industry to associate themselves with forming the decisions that will shape both their industry and the lives of people in the 21st century.

A 30-page report is being produced for the conference by the Editor of Future Intelligence and the multi-award winning former Sunday Times investigative journalist Peter Warren. The report will be used to generate media coverage at the conference and to attract national attention to the event. Former reports by Peter Warren have been credited with kick-starting numerous technology initiatives. His reports on discarded data which discovered former Beatle Paul McCartney’s data among that of many others on discarded hard drives brought the issue to public attention and prompted many companies to start data destruction practices. BT, which commissioned one of the reports said that the resultant press coverage had been worth in excess of £500,000 to it. Future Intelligence’s report into public Wi-Fi, ‘Tainted Love: how Wi-Fi betrays us’ went viral on the internet and helped the cyber security company F-Secure sell over 1m copies of its VPN software in two weeks. It also led to the term ‘The Herod Clause’ passing into legal parlance. Other reports for the European thinktank Netopia ‘Can we make the digital world ethical’ among others have generated considerable political interest and led to changes in policy. • The right to have the company logo prominently displayed as the sponsor of the report on the front page. • The company logo displayed on emails and bulletins related to the report. • A one-page introduction from the sponsoring company at the front of the report. • An interview with the sponsoring company as part of the content of the report. • A mention of the sponsoring company and the company logo on press material relating to the report.
