    About Orlando Fringe

    What’s the Fringe?

    What is The Fringe?

A 14-day arts festival that is founded on the concept of being:

    • 100% unjuried,
    • 100% uncensored
    • 100% accessible
    • And 100% of sales are returned back to the artists!

The Orlando Fringe is the longest running Fringe Festival in the United States, celebrating 26 years as “Orlando’s most unique cultural experience”.  Orlando Fringe is a proud member of the United States Association of Fringe Festivals (USAFF) www.fringefestivals.us, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) www.fringefestivals.com and The World Fringe Congress http://www.worldfringe.com/congress.

      What is The Fringe Mission?

The mission of the Orlando Fringe is to provide an accessible, affordable outlet that draws diverse elements of the community together and inspires creative excellence through the arts.

What is the history of the Fringe?

The history of Fringe Festivals began in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. There, a number of performing artists who were not official participants of the Edinburgh International Festival (whose participants are invited by its General Director) decided to produce their own work in empty stores and church basements. Thus, their work was staged literally “on the fringe” of the established festival. The concept was an immediate success and the Fringe soon became as – if not more – popular as the “official” Edinburgh Festival.  The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as of 2012 is the largest festival in the world and Europe’s #1 tourist destination.

Following the example of the Edinburgh Fringe, other Fringe Festivals sprang up in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia in the following decades, many of which follow the true Fringe philosophy – to provide artists with the opportunity to show their work in an uncensored and unjuried environment and to give 100% of ticket sales back to them.

The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival was created in 1991 by Terry Olson (now Director of the Orange County Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs), Andy Anthony and Rick Kunst. The first festival was held in 1992 in downtown Orlando, with most venues being created in empty storefronts specifically for the festival. This continued until 2004, when the festival was split between downtown Orlando and Loch Haven Park.  The move to Loch Haven proved a success and so, from 2005 on, the festival has been entirely in Loch Haven Park and the beautiful Ivanhoe Village neighborhood.

    About

    ThanksKilling The Musical

Created by Jeff Thomson, Jordan Mann and David Eck. All three were serious creators of musical theatre. They had everything that emerging artists need to make a name for themselves, awards, the respect of their peers and no money.

Being serious is all well and good, but every so often, there's a joy in writing something ridiculous, and as they sought a property to adapt, one name banged its way up to the top of their list.  ThanksKilling. A movie about a foul-mouthed homicidal turkey.

After seeing the original film of ThanksKilling, all three realized that this Turkey could not only fly. It could sing!

The original film's shoddy brilliance, its deliberately clichéd characters, bad acting, terrible puns, absurd premise and keen self-awareness are now the stuff of legend and the creators sought to not just polish the turd before them, but to embrace its turdiness and hold it aloft for all the world to see.

After receiving permission from the film's original creators, and embracing the film's "we shot it in a week for no money" essence, Jeff and Jordan wrote the entire show in three days. They were long days, filled with music, laughter and endless discussions on how many possible rhymes exist for MOTHER F**KER. As Jeff and Jordan wrote, the sublime and ridiculous got together, the work was completed and a musical was born in a cornucopia of blood, feathers, and bad bird puns.

The show was then blessed to be embraced by Balagan Theatre of Seattle who endowed the show with a cast, a director and the best scenery and costumes that could be had for $4.20.

It was just what was required, and ThanksKilling - The Musical burst forth like a necromanced turkey through the innards of an inbred hick to audience adulation and critic praise.

Where will Turkie strike next?  The 2017 Orlando International Fringe Festival!

“…Thankskilling the Musical' (http://www.thankskillingthemusical.com) re-creates the atmosphere of the original film and brings so much more to the table!  Five college kids leave school for Thanksgiving break. Little do they know that there's an evil turkey on the loose, who will do everything and anything in his power to end their lives!  Filled with nonpolitically correct humor, offensive content, clever one-liners, and extremely catchy music, fans of the Thankskilling franchise and fans of musical theater will find this to be a one of kind show!”

    Why should you sponsor?

Orlando Fringe has an estimated 72,000 visitors to the Orlando area from all over the world.  We are seeking generous sponsors that are willing to have their company name associated with the ARTS and show support for the arts of Central Florida.
