Thousands of children in Tanzania walk for countless miles daily, simply to get water. Whether from streams, ponds, or rivers, the water they carry back to their families is filled with bacteria that can lead to serious illness or even death. These are the children we will think of as we climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is on behalf of them that we are raising money and awareness. The money raised will enable Compassion International to educate children and their families on how to sanitize their water and teach proper hygiene. Not only will it help the children in Tanzania, but many other countries that Compassion International works with.
The trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro will take approximately 6 days. There will be 25 people in our group. We will be taking the Rongai route to approach Kibo from the north, near the Kenyan border. Our descent will be along the Marangu route. The Rongai route is particularly advantageous over the other choices of routes because it adds an additional day to the trek, which aids in acclimating to the altitude. Also, because of the more gradual ascent up to Kibo, with less variation in gains and losses of altitude, the success rate of reaching the summit is higher. Each day varies how much we will walk, anywhere from 3.7 miles on our shortest day to 12.5 miles on our final descending day.
Before the climb, we will be visiting many of the children in the programs set up by Compassion International. Through this we can gain a better perspective into how Compassion is changing lives in Tanzania!
Your sponsorship could mean saving the lives of more children and families than you can imagine! Compassion International will receive the proceeds to educate children and their families on the importance of sanitation, good hygiene and purifying their drinking water. There are hundreds of thousands of deaths yearly because of diahrea caused by bacteria-filled drinking water, it is said to be an estimated 502,000 deaths. Will you help me raise money for those in need?
My name is Hannah Stern. I love the outdoors and all things adventurous. I am a full time, live-in Nanny to two little boys. I come from a big, loud, crazy family whom I love dearly. I try to live a healthy lifestyle and am always excited to incorporate new things that may be of benefit to my everyday life. Most importantly, I am a Christian. I would not be going on this trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro had it not been that I felt God wanted to push me out of my comfort zone. I believe He has me going on this trip for a purpose!
