REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival,

Vineyard Theatre, Manhattan, New York, New York, United States Vineyard Theatre, Manhattan, New York, New York, United States

  • About the event

Created in 2001, REBEL VERSES (RV) is a 2-week festival of performances by some of the best youth companies in NYC & beyond. It is a journey into stories you might not know, told by people you might have forgotten. Our collective is youth-based, our extended family is ageless, sexless, raceless, and timeless.

2018 REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival performances are currently scheduled to take place on August 9, 10, 11 & August 16, 17, 18 starting at 7 PM and ending around 9 PM each night. RV will take place at the Vineyard Theatre located at 108 E 15th Street in New York City. All performances are open to the public to attend. Each performance night is comprised of six to eight 10 - 15 minute pieces.

    Why should you sponsor?

RV offers a unique opportunity to unite an underserved segment of the theater community that empowers young writers and performers between the ages of 13-19. RV was created to teach young artists the dynamic relationship between performer & audience and the power of connecting to an artistic community. RV is a launching point for many teens to recognize that the world is much bigger than themselves. The festival goes beyond classes to help develop the talent of young playwrights and performing artists by providing them the opportunity to work in a professional Off Broadway venue (*Giving many students their first off Broadway credit for their professional resumes and college applications). Participants present theatrical works that reflect the issues and emotions tackled by their generation and to hear diverse views. By experiencing the festival firsthand, we encourage these young artists not just to passively participate, but actively engage in school and in their community. We inspire the youth to take what they have learned and apply it to their lives. These young performers begin to understand what it means to network with their peers and exchange ideas to enhance their artistic and social growth.

    Developing Artists

Developing Artists (DA) is dedicated to providing opportunities for underdog (underserved) teens to reach their full potential through a practical application of the performing arts. We give students from culturally and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to proclaim themselves as artists and to find their place and their connection to their community through performing arts classes and our innovative signature program REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival.

As adults, we know navigating the pressures of today's society is perilous, but for a young person without any outlet for expression, a healthy development is impossible. Developing Artists addresses this need for teens by creating a forum to navigate life's increasing challenges (e.g. age discrimination, social injustices, gender equality, institutional racism, economic inequality, sexism); to use their voice in dealing with issues like rage or fear; and channel that energy into self- expression and self-confidence. DA is particularly committed to engaging with young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and has a track record of engaging positively with those who face significant barriers in their daily lives. Our core commitment is to bring rigorously vigorous performing arts training to those young people most in need; drawn from lone parent backgrounds; from ethnic minority communities; those who have suffered physical, sexual or mental abuse.
