OAKLAND, Calif. – As Oakland and the surrounding Alameda County area dig in their heels to combat the homeless crisis, Taylor Church prepares to do its part. On Sunday, Nov. 18, Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 1188 12th Street in Oakland, will hold its fourth annual Pre-Thanksgiving Meal event for the homeless from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall.
This is a homecooked Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings: turkey, dressing, gravy, ham, rolls, macaroni & cheese, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, cake and pie. In addition to that, Taylor Church will be giving away clothing and grocery bags.
Homelessness in Oakland/Alameda increased substantially between 2015 and 2017, as shown by the results of the Everyone Counts! biennial point-in-time count and survey performed by the EveryOne Home initiative. The number jumped from 4,040 to 5,629, a 29-percent increase. According to local news reports, 2,761 live in Oakland.
Hunger is only one of the many issues surrounding homelessness. The interplay between homelessness and rejection often creates a vicious cycle, as familial rejection or domestic abuse can result in homelessness, which leads to further rejection and abuse.
Pastor Anthony L. Jenkins, Sr. wants to combat that feeling of rejection. He hopes that providing an opportunity to sit and share a meal with others will send a message of compassion to Oakland's homeless and inspire them with hope.
The event will attract local press: radio and TV. The event will also be advertised widely on the web. This is a great opportunity to create good will in the community.
