    Donna Dyson

Donna Dyson is a fine artist who paints abstract, impressionist paintings. She discovered her talent at an early age when she was given a sketchbook from her father and gained an appreciation for art. Donna went on to study Fashion Illustration & Business Marketing at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandise) as well as various life-drawing classes from local schools. After FIDM, Donna went on to cosmetology school and became a licensed hairstylist, under the influence of her father, Art Dyson, who was a pioneer in the world of Black Hair Care and owner of Soul Scissors in the 70’s & 80’s.

Her love for art never died and was able to keep her artistic nature alive through hair. To her, hair is another art form and her clients are the canvas that she paints on. Donna developed and created her own salon, Dysonna Hair Studio and has styled her clients for the last 35 years. However, art was never far behind as she always had art hanging above the stations in her salon. During this time, Donna was also involved in the world of fashion and would produce various fashion production shows all throughout Los Angeles in venues such as Biltmore, Bonaventure Hotel, Century City Hotel, Beverly Hilton, Wilshire Ebell and more. These shows also influenced her to start a new project and published her own lifestyle magazine entitled Dysonna the magazine, a where she featured local artists, interviews with musicians and actors, as well as showcasing fashion designers and current hairstyles and was in publication for 10 years.

After 30 years, Donna then decided to begin her art career and created Dysonna City Art Gallery moved her salon upstairs. Donna’s goal with the gallery was to create a unique space where local artists can have a chance to put their art out to the community and encourage them to pursue their passions. She hosts monthly/bi-monthly art receptions to bring awareness to these local artists and in the 5 years of the gallery’s opening, Donna has created many community events such as fashion shows, poetry readings, concerts, and even produces yearly events such as the Los Angeles Jazz & Arts Festival (4 years), Art & Jazz In The Rose Gardens (2 years) and her Paint Along! On Wilshire Blvd. (4 years).

A few years into the gallery being open, Donna began hosting a series of monthly Paint, Drink & Laugh classes where she began to teach art to others in her gallery. After much influence from friends and clients, Donna decided to grab a brush and began putting paint to the canvas. Donna had her first solo exhibition in February of 2015 and received wonderful sales feedback from all of the guests in attendance. They are not only her hair clients but private art collectors. From that point, Donna continued to refine her skills and expand her styles from landscape, to abstract impressionism, and even figurative. Whether it’s hair, art, shows or business, Donna is an innovator and her passion for creativity inspires others to fully immerse themselves in their passions.
