If “life is a cabaret,” then Nearly Naked Broadway defines “being alive!”
This is a “next to normal” show where “anything goes”: Nearly Naked Broadway encourages singers, dancers, actors, variety and circus artists, and everyone in between to pick their favorite broadway number and strip it down -- literally. In other words: we’re mixing striptease and musical theatre in a sexy and silly musical revue.
Who is this show for?
This show is for burlesque dancers and theatre artists who wish they could show off their belting skills while taking off their belts (and their bras!) and want to give a new definition to Kander & Ebb's ol' razzle-dazzle. Everyone is encouraged to apply, regardless of their theatre resume, gender, abilities, etc. This show is intended to create a space for anyone who wants the chance to sing and dance their dream role — as long as they do it in their underwear. (Performers must, of course, submit an audition, but we’ll be casting a wide net for our casting.)
It’s also for (adult) theatre audiences who want to see a whole new side of their favorite Broadway musicals. This show brings the Bay Area's burlesque and theatre community together, one musical theatre sacrilege at a time. If you’ve got an open mind, a good attitude, and a love for anyone from Cole Porter to Pasek and Paul, then we have a seat for you in our theatre.
We’re also giving back to the community: once we hit a certain ticket threshold (which is determined by the size of our theatre, so we can pay back the artists who contribute their time to this show), a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to a San Jose community charity.
What should I expect?
Nearly Naked Broadway follows a burlesque/variety/cabaret format: the show is introduced and run by a host or hosts, and you will see individual acts (solos, duets, and group acts) that will run the gamut from classic burlesque and sing-and-strip acts to variety and circus acts like contortion, hooping, pole dance, and more. Every show will feature different performers and different acts, so you can come to every show and be surprised every time. Shows will run around 90 minutes with an intermission.
This will be a regular show, depending on venues and fundraising. More details about the when and where to come!
There are several reasons to sponsor Nearly Naked Broadway:
DeeDee Queen is a drag queen trapped in a cis-woman’s body—a performing woman who is performing “woman.” She is a burlesque, pole, and drag artist who teaches burlesque and storytelling and co-produces Curtains Cabaret, a theatrical burlesque company in Redwood City. DeeDee recently developed and produced a feminist one-woman burlesque show, which she workshopped at Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City and premiered in Redwood City. (She will be reviving the show in San Francisco in 2018.) She teaches theatre in San Jose and will be performing in several musicals in 2018.
DeeDee has been seen at the California Burlypicks (2016/17), Hawaii Burlesque Festival (2016/17), Vermont Burlesque Festival (2017), Great Burlesque Expo (2017), Freezing Tassel in Alaska (2017), Philadelphia Burlesque Festival (2017), Hollywood Burlesque Festival (2017), Oregon Burlesque Festival (2017), Hawaii Burlesque Festival (2017), and the Amsterdam Burlesque Awards (2017).
