little angels cocktail party 2020,

Western Australia, Australia Western Australia, Australia

  • About the event

WIRF is one of Western Australia’s leading independent research institutions dedicated to improving the health of women and infants.  We focus our research and programs across three principal areas: the prevention of preterm birth, gynaecological cancers, and women’s mental health. This research and programs have directly contributed to a number of improved clinical practices and health outcomes.

WIRF a high impact health research institute

One of WIRF’s most significant areas of impact is through our work into preterm birth prevention. Preterm birth is the greatest cause of death and disability in children up to five years of age. Worldwide, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm each year.

Our world-unique WA Preterm Birth Prevention Initiative (PTBPI) has reduced the rate of preterm birth across WA by 8% in its first year. That’s almost 200 families prevented from having a preterm birth and the prospect of long-term care and permanent disability for their child.  Those born at the earliest gestational ages may suffer from severe problems such as cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease, blindness and developmental delay.

    Why should you sponsor?

In addition to intrinsically linking your organisation with one of Australia’s leading medical research organisations, I also feel the event represents a fantastic opportunity to highlight and showcase your company’s philanthropy and commitment to promoting and enabling social good.

WIRF’s Preterm Birth Prevention Initiative not only saves babies lives, it also represents a considerable saving for governments and health systems everywhere.  Immediate care for a new born in the weight range of 750 grams – 2kg typically costs the health system anywhere between $59,000 to $216,000. This does not extend to the ongoing costs associated with life-long health issues for those born too soon.

It is impossible to accurately quantify a return on investment of the program but based on previous year’s incidence of preterm birth (within the various birth weight bands), this equates to a net benefit cost ratio of 24:1 thus, every dollar invested in the PTBPI returned $24 in direct and indirect economic and health benefits.

In 2017 I sadly lost my baby boy to preterm birth at 26 weeks, and to somehow found a way to work through my grief i have decided to put all of my energy into organizing a fundraising event that would create awareness of preterm birth and what we as a community can do to help prevent it in the future.

In 2018 I held my first event, a high tea and this year we had an amazing turn out with 180 people for a Gala Ball at the  In a matter of 12 months and two successful events I managed to raise over $35,000.

I am a mother with a passion to make a difference and prevent as many families as i can from the heartbreak i went through and therefore am unable to make this event possible without the help of generous sponsors.
