ROYAL FRESHWATER BAY YACHT CLUB - PERTH, AUSTRALIA
Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club are extremely proud to host the 2019 Perth WASZP Games on the Swan River, in waters
close to Fresh Water Bay Yacht Club. The event will see over 110 Competitors from over 10 + countries. The club has out
standing facilities and has hosted many prestigious world class Sailing events over its long and illustrious history. Being
situated on the river and having superb viewing access to the race track, there is no better place to showcase this exciting
and colourful class.
THE RACING AREA
Situated between the river and ocean, the waters off Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club offer superb sailing conditions
in protected and pristine sailing waters. This sailing arena provides stadium style racing in the natural amphitheatre of
Freshwater Bay with excellent viewing for spectators from the Clubhouse and grounds. However, another option is to sail
in Melville Waters, only a short sail way and is an expansive stretch of water able to accommodate a larger number of
WASZPS.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
The first WASZP International Games held in Campione, Lake Garda, Italy attracted 55 WASZPs only 12 months into produc
tion this was 20% of the total amount of boats sold at this time. In June 2018 the class headed back to Lake Garda with
over 63 boats competing for the 1st ever WASZP European Championships. Another 10 boats came just for the event and
training making 73 boats in total. In 2019 we are confident of attracting 110+ boats to this event from 10+ countries. It will
be the jewel in the crown for the Perth summer of sailing. We believe that associating with the WASZP brand, it will cre
ate positive and unique opportunity to create a positive and on-going association with the sport of sailing and foiling.
GPS SPEED WASZP
encourages the use of technology to enhance the sailing experience. The
use of GPS based speed recording devices is sanctioned by WASZP class rules.
This allows for sailors using kit such as the Velocitek ProStart to record average
and peak speeds during sailing sessions. WASZP Speed Demons uses this data
to award daily prizes. At the recent European’s the GPS speed challenge was
hotly contested with the top speed from the event coming from Norwegian Erik
Karlsen with 22.9 knots recorded on the final day. The fastest speed we have seen
at an event is still 26.1 knots set by New Zealander Nick Olsen at the Australian
Nationals in 2018..
SLALOM
Slalom (Ground breaking in the world of sailing) WASZP Slalom is a short course,
all downwind format that is proving popular with competitors. Lasting only
3-5mins per race it is really exciting for the spectators both live and watching
on-line. WASZP Slalom should be run in foiling conditions only with ideal condi
tions of 12 -18 knots and flattish water. It is ideal to locate close to shore / view
ing area if conditions permit. Music and commentary on the shore could bring
the event completely alive. Competitors race in a series of heats with the top
4 placegetters in each heat progressing to the next round. The heats continue
until a final with the top 8 boats. The final can be single race or 3 races with all
to count. Initial assignment to heats can be done randomly via draw or an initial
seeding round can be run to provide a balance of skills levels in every initial heat. We are the only class that runs this event and it is changing the world of sailing!

BRAND
The success of the WASZP to date is as much in the attitude of the sailors and their aspirations as it is in the performance
of the boat. The class is attracting a range of age groups and experience levels with a common goal – to break free from
the constraints of traditional sailboat racing.
The focus is fun, fair racing – without the usual formality. WASZP events reflect these goals and seek to go well beyond the
usual sailing regatta. The focus is on building a festival atmosphere, encouraging sailors and spectators to have fun on
and off the water. With strong manufacturer support and by using innovative racing formats, supported with technology
and media, along with an absolute focus on delivering a positive experience, the WASZP lifestyle comes to life.
