Girl Scout STEM Day is a program to foster scientific excitement in 5-16 year old girl scouts. This program is run by the Association of Women in STEM on Anschutz Medical Campus, and this will be our second time hosting this program. Last year we took the girl scout troops into science labs, and led them through different experiments. For example, in one of the labs, we taught the scouts the fundamentals of electricity, and then had them build their own telegraphs (that they could then take home!). We then built a large telegraph all together, and had scouts send messages in morse code from room to room. We're still in the process of developing the curriculum for this year, but the experiments will be tailored to each age group.
This year, we're planning to start all scouts at 10:30AM in a quick introduction program with the scientists who will be leading the day, and then separate into labs for our first experimental block. We will then break for lunch, during which time we'll have a panel of women scientists that the scouts can chat with and ask questions. We will then have our second experimental block, and then end for the day around 2:30PM.
By sponsoring our event, you will be encouraging the next generation of scientists, and promoting diversity and inclusion within the scientific field.
My name is Shelly Jones, and I'm a member of the Association of Women in STEM on the Anschutz Medical Campus. I'm currently a neuroscience PhD student who is passionate about diversity and inclusion in the scientific field. STEM fields have a number of barriers that make it more difficult for women to succeed, and this type of event teaches girls from a young age that women can succeed in science, and that anything is possible!
