    Bully’s & Boots Dog Foster and Training Program Our new program is a dog foster and training program that will provide emotional support and service dogs for veterans. It is a first-of-its-kind program that will engage veterans by training them to foster and adopt bully breeds, which are some of the most misunderstood dogs.

    The program is a comprehensive training program for a minimum of 120 hours over the course of at least six months. The training program will take place in a variety of settings, such as the veteran’s home, school or workplace, the community, public spaces and public transportation.

    The dogs will have received hundreds of hours of prior training by puppy raisers before being matched with the veterans.

    Some of the planned activities for veterans include:

    A. Initial training: Sixty (60) hours total training time, lasting 3-4 weeks, for 5 days a week (Monday to Friday), for 4-6 hours per day at our location near zip code 98034.

    B. Continued training: Sixty (60) hours total training time, lasting 15 weeks, once a week, for 3-4 hours per day, at various public and private settings.

    C. Certification examination, including: 1. A written or oral examination that tests the veteran’s knowledge of dog care, behavior, training principles, vocabulary and public access 2. A practical test of basic obedience and public access behavior conducted in a public location 3. A specialized skills test, which determines the skill of the dog/human team in specific skills that the dogs were taught to perform for the veteran

    D. Probation: Additional six months before ownership of the dog is turned over to the veteran. During this time, the veteran is required to adhere to Bully’s and Boots rules and regulations, and to check in with the training staff at least monthly.

    Addressing the Needs of our Veterans

    Veterans that return home from active duty have particular challenges, which may range from physical disability, psychological and psychiatric diagnoses, to problems re-integrating back into society. As a veteran enrolls in our program, they will meet with training staff who will begin to understand their particular needs and to begin identifying dogs that would be suitable for the veterans. Dogs are matched with veterans based on the dog’s skills, strengths, temperament, and energy level, as well as the veteran’s needs, experience, personality and lifestyle.

    At the moment, the American with Disabilities Act does not require service dogs to be registered or certified. However, all the dogs in our program will have documentation and identification in addition the training required to become a service dog. Currently, the only requirements for certifying a dog a service dog are that a doctor determines that a person has a disability and that a service dog is trained in specific tasks to help the disabled person mitigate the symptoms of the disability.

    It is important to note that there may be an indefinite wait for the right dog to become available for a particular veteran participant in the program. The success of a partnership is due to many factors, the least of which is the veteran’s own commitment to the training process. The training program is customized to the needs and abilities of the veteran.

    Requirements for Acceptance into the Program Applicants will be considered regardless of race, color, religion, creed, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation and other categories protected by law. However, there are some basic requirements to be considered as an applicant, including:

    1. Living within a 50 mile or approximately one hour travel time to Bully’s & Boots for approximately one year after joining the program;

    2. Ability to provide transportation to and from the training sessions;

    3. Ability to meet the physical, mental, and emotional needs of a dog and to have an adequate support system in place when unable to do that themselves;

    4. Continued enrolment in any mental health treatment for the duration of the program (if in treatment at the time of application);

    5. Full support of family and caregivers, employer and landlord to receive a service dog;

    6. Willingness and ability to commit to the training and program schedule; and

    7. Ability to provide financial support for the dog after ownership has been signed over.

    Bully breeds participating in the program include Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, among others. Dogs enter service training between the ages of 6 and 18 months.

    Volunteer Staff All the programs run by Grapes, Paws & Hops Foundation are volunteer based. Our volunteers play a huge part in our events, marketing and day-to-day tasks. The organization also accepts inkind donations such as dog supplies, dog food and infrastructure for the training facilities.

    Your support is invaluable to improve the condition of both our veterans and our misunderstood and forgotten bully breeds.
