  • About the event

In South Africa there is an annual campaign to focus attention on the injustices against women and children, commonly known as '16 Days of Activism Against Children and Women Abuse. The Foundation has long acknowledged the campaign, but felf that these communities are abused on daily basis, hence 365 days.

The South African government has long recognized children, youth and young women as marginalized communities through various legislative policy frameworks. Moreover, these target groups are vulnerable to drugs and substance abuse, child trafficking and bullying. These behaviours individually or concurrently result in violent crimes, gender based violence, rape, commercial sex work and low self-esteem, hopelessness; and are most likely going to impact negatively and have unimagined consequences within rural communities and schools. The event seeks to mainstream these strategic target groups in this programme.  Furthermore, it is proposed as a result of violent crimes within rural school and communities.

Young people cannot maximize their potential if are not healthy and safe. The youth in Peddie experience social challenges, such as violent crime, access to learning opportunities, substance and alcohol abuse. This not only increase the burden of disease in Peddie, but also compromises education outcomes, destroy families, and fuels insecurity, all of which threatens economic growth and job creation. Results of a study conducted by Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention, intended to identify the most significant risk and protective factors relating to young people, within South African schools. It was presumed that young people who choose not to commit crime are best suited to provide information on the factors that discourage youth criminal behaviour. The research has found that violence in schools has garnered considerable media attention in South Africa in recent years. In the past year alone, local media coverage of brazenly violent acts – which have at times proven fatal – have again fueled public opinion that school violence in South Africa is escalating at an alarming rate and that something needs to be done about it.
