Serbia Butoh Retreat 2020 is a financially accessible butoh dance theatre cultural exchange camp situated in south Serbia and goes on from August 17th thru August 30th in Šumarak, Serbia. Attending the entire thing is not mandatory. Registration is 56 dollars (50 euros) for 2 weeks.
The festival targets international butoh performers, and butoh enthusiasts, but anyone is welcome. The space is LGBTQA-friendly, Creative Commons.
The center guidelines makes this butoh event a retreat in a stricter sense. Within the grounds, there is a smoke-free, alcohol-free, and 100% vegetarian philosophy, helping facilitate an environment of discipline and encouragement to enter deep into the butoh body from a clean slate.
August of 2019, we had 67 happy participants total.
Why should you sponsor?
Supporting this retreat is a noble cause becausse it was created as a reaction to the financially non-accessible butoh gatherings in Europe (such as Germany's eXit). With a fee of 50 euros plus food, the retreat widens accessiblity to folks not financially well-off and ithose nterested in butoh dance theatre.
Adam Koan is a half Colombian half Venezuelan-American and international butoh performer, educator, writer, and scholar. Former facilitator at Himalaya Subbody Butoh and the organizer of the 2-week Sesalac Butoh Retreat 2019 (former name of the retreat) in Serbia.
Adam was raised in the small town of Belleview, Florida. He is heavily determined in spreading the obscure and oftentimes grotesque art that penetrates deep into the psyche-body connection. He also puts effort into increasing accessibility of butoh to the marginalized or less privileged, e.g. the LGBTQA, PoC, and mentally and physically unique. He is a classically trained dancer from Hillsborough Community College (2010 – 2012) and University of South Florida (2012 – 2013) and studied butoh at the Indian Himalayas at the Subbody School of Butoh (Fall 2013, Spring 2014, Summer & Fall 2017, Summer & Fall 2018; Spring 2019).
